Hysteroscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus (womb) using a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope. This instrument is inserted through the vagina and cervix, allowing doctors to diagnose and treat various uterine conditions without the need for incisions.
Hysteroscopy is commonly used for:
- Diagnosing abnormal bleeding
- Investigating infertility or recurrent miscarriages
- Removing polyps, fibroids, or adhesions
- Locating and removing intrauterine devices (IUDs)
- Performing sterilization procedures
It can be performed as a diagnostic procedure (to examine the uterus) or an operative procedure (to treat conditions). Depending on the complexity, it may be done in a doctor's office or hospital, often with local, regional, or general anesthesia.
The duration of a hysteroscopy depends on whether it is diagnostic or operative:
Diagnostic hysteroscopy (just examining the uterus) usually takes 5 to 30 minutes.
Operative hysteroscopy (treating conditions like polyps or fibroids) can take 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
If performed in an office setting, it is often quicker and requires little to no anesthesia. In a hospital, where general anesthesia may be used, additional time is needed for preparation and recovery.
For outpatient and professional billing, use an ICD-10-CM diagnosis code based on the patient’s condition, such as:
- N92.0 – Excessive bleeding in premenopausal women
- N85.2 – Hypertrophy of the endometrium
- D25.9 – Uterine fibroid, unspecified
- N84.0 – Polyp of corpus uteri
