πŸ’‘ Managing Bowel Movements with a Rectocele – Practical Tips to Share with Patients πŸ’œ

Pelvic Floor

When it comes to rectocele management, many patients struggle with bowel movements but feel unsure about what they can do to help. The good news?Β

There are several simple, effective strategies that can make a big difference! Here are some key tips to share:

βœ… Perianal Pressure/Splinting – Applying gentle pressure to the perineum or vaginal wall can provide support and help guide stool through the rectum for easier passage. Patients often feel self-conscious about this technique, so reassuring them that it’s a well-known and effective strategy is key!

βœ… Proper Positioning – A small footstool can be a game-changer! Elevating the knees while sitting on the toilet helps align the rectum for smoother elimination.

βœ… Fiber-Rich Diet – Encourage plenty of fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Softer stools mean less straining and easier bowel movements.

βœ… Hydration – Remind patients that drinking enough water is crucial for keeping things moving and preventing constipation.

βœ… Pelvic Floor Exercises – Strengthening the pelvic floor (when appropriate) can improve support for the rectum and surrounding organs. Kegels aren’t always the answer, but tailored exercises can be incredibly beneficial.

βœ… Stool Softeners (When Needed) – Sometimes, a little extra help is necessary. If dietary adjustments aren’t enough, stool softeners or mild laxatives (under medical guidance) can be useful.

βœ… Avoid Straining – This one’s a biggie! Straining can make a rectocele worse and contribute to other pelvic floor issues. Teaching patients how to relax, breathe, and use supportive techniques (like splinting) can go a long way.

By guiding patients toward these small but effective changes, we can empower them to manage their symptoms with confidence! πŸ’œ
